At this point in time, beginning of 2025, Romania does not have a functional intentional community outside a religious context. Actually just a kilometer away from my location there is a religious community but i will argue that those not count since the purpose, the reason of being of this community does not come from people but from god, so it is not their intention but god’s. But i already digress and this is just the beginning of the text.

There are many people that do not resonate with city and societies values so they decide to move, in a village or in the wild, like me. This move is like a visit to a contemporary doctor where you address the symptoms but not the cause so i argue it is not a sustainable solution. Each individual or family that moves, creates just a lonely island in an ocean of indifference. The villagers do not care about you since they stopped caring for the village so they do not care about a newcomer. If you move into the wild there is no one there, just a bear, an owl and a squirrel that live their natural lives caring little about you. And then one day a wave crashes your island and you are stranded in the middle of nowhere, unable to go Home and unable to return to the great island, society.

We are social animals and we do not run away from people, we run away from values that we do not share. We are social animals so we run after deep connections. We are social animals and we seek community.

You can argue that you already live in a community, or you are part of a digital community. But at most this is a bandage because how many can you name? How many are your friends? How many can you trust? How many will be by your side when life will hit you hard? They are not bad people but they did not choose to be part of the community, it was not an intentional act.

So let’s start together building an intentional community, let’s start building our own island, based on a common vision, mission and values. Let’s build out of choices, with willing people, with people willing to grow, learn, be vulnerabile. And if we put the right ingredients time will not work against us but with us, so when storm will crush our shore and old age will make us rusty, we will welcome them.

P.S: when i say “to build together” it may mean to build an intentional community, but it must not be in the same place or the same community. There are many visions and from this many missions and values so we should start building a framework and a set of tools that each of us may use to build a  long lived intentional community.
